Approximating Multilinear Monomial Coefficients and Maximum Multilinear Monomials in Multivariate Polynomials

چکیده
This paper is our third step towards developing a theory of testing monomials in multivariate polynomials and concentrates on two problems: (1) How to compute the coefficients of multilinear monomials; and (2) how to find a maximum multilinear monomial when the input is a ΠΣΠ polynomial. We first prove that the first problem is #P-hard and then devise a O∗(3ns(n)) upper bound for this problem for any polynomial represented by an arithmetic circuit of size s(n). Later, this upper bound is improved to O∗(2n) for ΠΣΠ polynomials. We then design fully polynomial-time randomized approximation schemes for this problem for ΠΣ polynomials. On the negative side, we prove that, even for ΠΣΠ polynomials with terms of degree ≤ 2, the first problem cannot be approximated at all for any approximation factor ≥ 1, nor ”weakly approximated” in a much relaxed setting, unless P=NP. For the second problem, we first give a polynomial time λ-approximation algorithm for ΠΣΠ polynomials with terms of degrees no more a constant λ ≥ 2. On the inapproximability side, we give a n(1−2)/2 lower bound, for any 2 > 0, on the approximation factor for ΠΣΠ polynomials. When terms in these polynomials are constrained to degrees ≤ 2, we prove a 1.0476 lower bound, assuming P 6= NP ; and a higher 1.0604 lower bound, assuming the Unique Games Conjecture.

Algorithms for Testing Monomials in Multivariate Polynomials
This paper is our second step towards developing a theory of testing monomials in multivariate polynomials. The central question is to ask whether a polynomial represented by an arithmetic circuit has some types of monomials in its sum-product expansion. The complexity aspects of this problem and its variants have been investigated in our first paper by Chen and Fu (2010), laying a foundation f...
متن کاملTowards Randomized Testing of $q$-Monomials in Multivariate Polynomials
Given any fixed integer q ≥ 2, a q-monomial is of the format x1 i1 x s2 i2 · · · x st it such that 1 ≤ sj ≤ q − 1, 1 ≤ j ≤ t. q-monomials are natural generalizations of multilinear monomials. Recent research on testing multilinear monomials and q-monomials for prime q in multivariate polynomials relies on the property that Zq is a field when q ≥ 2 is prime. When q > 2 is not prime, it remains o...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Testing Monomials in Multivariate Polynomials
The work in this paper is to initiate a theory of testing monomials in multivariate polynomials. The central question is to ask whether a polynomial represented by certain economically compact structure has a multilinear monomial in its sum-product expansion. The complexity aspects of this problem and its variants are investigated with two folds of objectives. One is to understand how this prob...
متن کاملLower Bounds for Monotone Counting Circuits
A {+,×}-circuit counts a given multivariate polynomial f , if its values on 0-1 inputs are the same as those of f ; on other inputs the circuit may output arbitrary values. Such a circuit counts the number of monomials of f evaluated to 1 by a given 0-1 input vector (with multiplicities given by their coefficients). A circuit decides f if it has the same 0-1 roots as f . We first show that some...
متن کاملExact Parameterized Multilinear Monomial Counting via k-Layer Subset Convolution and k-Disjoint Sum
We present new algorithms for exact multilinear k-monomial counting which is to compute the sum of coefficients of all degree-k multilinear monomials in a given polynomial P over a ring R described by an arithmetic circuit C. If the polynomial can be represented as a product of two polynomials with degree at most d < k, our algorithm can solve this problem in O∗( ( n ↓d ) ) time, where ( n ↓d )...
